During the Christmas season, Liepājas skaņas invites audiences to Rundāle Palace for a concert in which the Berči Quartet, together with Guntis Kuzma — clarinettist and chief conductor of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra — will present gems of Romantic-era chamber music.
At the heart of the programme is Johannes Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet — one of the most important chamber works from the composer’s late period. It was written at a time when Brahms had already resolved to retire from composition, but the artistry of clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld inspired him to create music that has become one of the most significant works in the clarinet repertoire.
The quintet has the scale and emotional range of Brahms’s symphonies, yet its style is far more intimate and lyrical. Here Brahms no longer seems to speak to the public, but to his closest friends. The music intertwines poignant nostalgia, moments of anger and protest, playful humour, and serene clarity.
Alongside Brahms, the programme will feature Franz Schubert’s String Quartet “Rosamunde” — one of the composer’s most poetic chamber works. In it, the melodic beauty characteristic of Schubert’s late style is combined with a gentle melancholy.
The work takes its title from the theme of the second movement, which Schubert also used in his incidental music for Helmina von Chézy’s play Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus.
To conclude the concert, the finale of Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Quintet will allow the clarinet to reveal the full virtuosic brilliance of its sound and bring the evening to a sparkling conclusion.
