At the season finale of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, the programme will feature Clouds – an intimate and atmospheric piece by Ēriks Ešenvalds, the monumental and deeply personal Symphony No. 3 by Pēteris Vasks, and a gem of Romantic piano music – the Piano Concerto composed by Clara Schumann at the age of just fifteen.
Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor is a remarkably mature and virtuosic work, especially considering that she began composing it at the age of thirteen and completed it shortly before her sixteenth birthday. Technically challenging and emotionally rich, the concerto reveals the young composer’s ability to combine dazzling virtuosity with refined musical expression.
One of the most celebrated pianists of the 19th century, Clara Schumann created this concerto to showcase her own pianistic style. It is characterised by daring leaps and wide chords, demonstrating the piano’s capacity to express everything from lyrical tenderness to majestic triumph.
Regarded as one of the most beautiful piano concertos in the history of classical music, its melodic richness and emotional depth will be brought to life by the brilliant pianist Lauma Skride.
Ēriks Ešenvalds is a composer who always seeks depth and light in his music. Clouds is an evocative soundscape reflecting the boundlessness of the sky. In this symphonic fantasy, music becomes the sky itself – watching the world from above. Composed in 2006, the work is dedicated to the memory of the composer’s brother Oskars.
Pēteris Vasks' Symphony No. 3 was written at the invitation of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra and premiered in 2005 in Tampere, Finland. In this work, Vasks seeks to reveal both the splendour of God’s creation and the destiny of humanity and his own nation.
The composer’s signature thematic palette unfolds not only in the string textures but also through expressive wind solos and rich orchestral colours. Notably, the double bass solo passages recall Vasks’ early career as a double bassist.
This is a monumental and deeply personal composition, encompassing both moments of dramatic tension and hopeful serenity. The symphony serves as a meditation on the relationship between humankind and nature – and on the light that can break through darkness.
