Arnold Schoenberg (1874–1951) Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), Op. 4
Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) String Sextet No. 2, Op. 36

Two string sextets. Two eras. Two voices, one subject: the inner life of a human being.

Brahms’ Second Sextet is like a letter from the Romantic era – intimate, reflective, filled with longing, memory, and a quiet sense of reconciliation. Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night, inspired by Richard Dehmel’s poem, looks to the future – a music of heightened drama and expression, at once fragile and shattering.

Yet both works meet at a single point: the moment when a person is left alone with their truth.
